A new study by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is promising to improve the quality of the generic form of the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor. The findings could make the drug the first statin approved for use in patients with type 2 diabetes with LDL or high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels of 10 to 30 mg/dL (the lowest limit in patients without diabetes) in the U. S.
In the latest study, researchers from the University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota Health Center and the University of Minnesota Health Services (USMHD) analyzed data from a nationwide survey of patients treated with rosuvastatin (Seroquel). This is the second study to assess the use of rosuvastatin (Crestor) in patients with type 2 diabetes, a type of diabetes that has been linked to elevated LDL-C levels, as well as cholesterol levels.
The study, conducted in the US, also analyzed the data from the Minnesota survey and found that in most patients, the patients treated with rosuvastatin had a lower LDL-C level of 10 to 30 mg/dL, which was considered low enough for treatment with Crestor.
The findings suggest that statins, which are often prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes, can be safely used in patients with a high-risk of developing cardiovascular disease. These patients should be able to take Crestor at the same time as their cholesterol levels, which can help prevent or lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study was conducted by the Minnesota Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which enrolled a total of 16,839 people in the Minnesota population who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Of this population, about one-third were men and about half were women. About half of these people were treated with generic simvastatin, and a third of these people received a different medication.
The most common side effects were headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. The researchers found that rosuvastatin was the most effective statin treatment among the drugs used in the study. They also found that rosuvastatin was effective at lowering LDL-C levels by about 40% for those treated with the new medication.
